Chile y Estados Unidos: ¿Cuáles son algunas similitudes y diferencias ?
2. La propina
In the US, just as it happens in Chile, there's the custom of leaving a tip when you go eat at a restaurant. In Chile the tip constitutes the 10% of the final value.
Here in the US, I still haven't managed to figure out how much money you have to leave for a tip.
3. Meals/Las comidas
In the US people eat lunch very early (usually at around noon). In Chile, we usually eat lunch at around 2pm.
In the US people eat dinner at around 5-6pm. In Chile at around 6-7pm we have what we call once (a kind of breakfast but in the afternoon-evening). Then, we eat dinner at around 9-10pm.
This is my first time in the United States, and in this time away from Chile, I have learned many things about US culture that I did not know before. Thanks to this I have been able to realize that Chile and the US are not as different as I thought and we actually share many similarities.
Saludos
Greetings
A big difference between Chile and the US- that I know also constitutes a bit of a problem for international students going to Chile- has to do with greetings.
In Chile, when we greet someone, even if it's a stranger, we give each other a kiss on the cheek. However, this is not a real kiss, but what we really do is that we blow a kiss to the air next to the person's cheek. In this sense, it definitely involves much more closeness.
In the US, people greet each other by shaking hands. During my first weeks in the US, I had to battle my habit of giving a kiss on the cheek. Now I am getting used to shaking hands.
